Have you ever felt like the obstacles you're facing are insurmountable? As in, if God doesn't do this, it's just not happening?
I sure have.
There are times I feel overwhelmed and uncertain, yet I can honestly say that my faith in God's ability never swerves. I doubt my own abilities to make it through, around, or over the obstacles. But I know and firmly believe God can do anything. Anything.
Last summer I was feeling particularly overwhelmed, and God gave me a vivid dream:
* * * *
I drove directly behind a giant bulldozer on a crazy dirt road under construction. Both sides of the road held huge trucks doing all sort of work, along with men wearing orange vests and hard hats.
Dirt and debris flew across my windshield as I trailed the bulldozer, and it required all my attention and concentration to remain close and focused. The road held enormous holes, strange angles and shifted from steep to narrow.
It took every bit of energy I possessed to continue directly behind the bulldozer and to stay focused, but as long as I did, I made progress. I determined that no matter what it took, I would remain close behind that bulldozer and keep focused.
* * * *
I awoke from that dream amazed and encouraged. God had given me a picture of not only what He was doing in my life, but what I was required of me--and all of us-- as we attempt to move forward while facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
God's part is to clear the way for us--He removes obstacles, accomplishing the heavy moving and lifting we cannot manage alone. I love how He showed Himself as a bulldozer, because that shows me that He will not allow anything to stand in our way. If God wants us to move forward, He is going to make it happen.
Our part is radiantly clear:
1. Be determined. This is not a casual decision to see how things go. We must determine that we are willing to do everything it takes to pursue God and keep moving forward.
2. Stay actively close to God. This requires hard work. The Lord was moving fast and it truly required all my effort not to fall behind. Sometimes life is crazy, but regardless of how fast it flies by, we need to do our parts and make every endeavor to stay close to the Lord.
2. Stay actively close to God. This requires hard work. The Lord was moving fast and it truly required all my effort not to fall behind. Sometimes life is crazy, but regardless of how fast it flies by, we need to do our parts and make every endeavor to stay close to the Lord.
3. Remain focused. All the activity on both sides of the road competed for my attention. Yet a glance in either direction would cost me. Isn't this a spectacular picture of our lives? Distractions abound, but those who are focused move forward.
How about you? Could you use some bulldozing right now? Which of the three points is most difficult for you--determination, staying close to God, or being focused?

Staying focused for the long haul is definately the hardest for me.
I get distracted by all kinds of things: the problem itself, other obstacles, what God seems to be doing for others...you get the picture.
Then God speaks to me through His word--some verse that pings my heart just a little--and He pours His love and grace and mercy through the puncture.
He's way good like that.
Sweet dreams.
According to the day and the situation...sad to admit. Mostly I think it's hard to stay focused. Even today as I know I need to focus on preparing a little testimony talk for MOPS on Tues, I'm distacted by life. Please pray for me.
I love the idea of seeing God as a bulldozer...Who clears the way, if I will only follow closely with determination and focus. So Good!!
I think staying focused is the hardest for me, also. But it seems that God is always there, patiently waiting for me to re focus on HIM. It always amazes me when God reveals something to me...so clearly...and then I realize He was there all the time, it was me that got distracted.
Oh, Julie. My problem is in the "none of the above" column. My trouble is knowing that I HAVE a bulldozer. I try to move dirt by myself with a teaspoon! And I could sooooo use some help with the heavy earth moving right now. Thank you for the good word today.
Blessings on you,
Wendi
I had to learn to remain determined. There have been so many times I wanted to give up, and decided that all my efforts were meaningless, until about two weeks ago.:) Nothing spectactular, but I received a confirmation that God does indeed know what's happening to us and does care even when the bulldozing is going hard.
Julie, I like that! God is my bulldozer! Great meaning to another dream. thanks!
What a good word picture to keep in mind when we're feeling overwhelmed -- that God is right in front of us, clearing the way. I think my biggest challenge comes in the form of distractions. So important to pray for His leading and guiding every day...
Good message - reminds me of Pastor Jason's message this morning...2 Chronicles 20:12 - For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”
Thanks for sharing that illustration!
I like your words ~ "staying actively close to God."
Fondly,
Glenda
Thank you for your prayers and sweet comment on our blog.
You have a beautiful blog. You are one talented lady!
I will be back to read more when my eyes are falling asleep :-)

As a mother of two young boys obsessed with construction vehicles, I love the bulldozer image. Their toys are taking on new meaning for me now! Staying focused is the hardest part for me. I feel the need to "double check" that everything is going well, watch what others are doing, and just "make sure" that I am on the right path. All of that is just a major distraction.
Thank you for sharing your dream - great analogy!
Love this message, Julie! With the storm we are in the middle of right now, I needed this reminder. He is faithful and He is leading the way!
Great visual with the bull dozer...my challenge is keeping up with God or should I say I just get lazy. Your blog was inspiring and encouraging to get back behind the bulldozer and plow some roads!
Hello Julie! I just wanted to stop by and say hello. I'm writing a book for Harvest House as well--a devo that will be out in July. Glad to meet a publishing "sister" of mine! :)
I am reminded to disregard what I see and focus on what I hear. What is seen can easily serve as a distraction from what God has spoken. Though what I see or am experiencing is real, God’s truth prevails. As I govern myself according to the truth of God, I know He will make the way. I will walk be faith and not by sight being reminded that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” ~Psalm 32:8
Great post Julie. Reading about your dreams always gives me goosebumps. I'm a pretty determined person who's not deterred by obstacles but I have a heck of a hard time following close. It's hard for me to stay focused and not get distracted by others sights along the way.
I've been thinking about you. How is your book coming along?
Happy Friday,
Kelli
