A sweet young couple in our church is expecting their first baby, and while I measured and cut the adorable wrapping paper for the gift I'd be taking to their upcoming shower, I couldn't help but chuckle.
A Diaper Genie appeared on their gift registry, along with typical first-time parent needs, such as bibs, teeny little socks and matching towel and washcloth sets. I opted to buy the Diaper Genie and a beautiful, soft blanket. As I taped the gift wrap to the big box, I read the words "Seals Odors". I laughed because while this nifty little gadget does indeed seal odors, every few days it must be opened and emptied, allowing its aromatic contents to escape and permeate half the house.
Something sinister seems to happen when diapers marinate together over a period of several days. The result is a gag-inducing fragrance not for the faint of heart. But a new parent has to do what they have to do. All while their charming newborn snuggles in the crib, obliviously sighing and gurgling.
In a similar sort of way, there are times when some really stinky stuff gets deposited way down into my heart - and then sealed off. Initially placed there because of the hurt quotient, I intend to get to it, eventually.
Then God comes along and tells me that something sinister is beginning to happen. Hurts are marinating along with a bad attitude, and before you know it, my heart has surpassed stinky and gone straight to bio-terror.
Time for a little Holy Ghost Lysol.
1 John 1:9 says,"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." So I allow the Lord to do what He has to do. He purges, He cleans, He makes my heart as good as new - which is far better than Lysol, a Tide-to-Go pen, and a Diaper Genie all mixed together.
I guess you could say that Jesus is the permanent stink remover. And that, my friends, is a wonderful gift indeed.
