Every one of us has a God-given destiny. Our destinies are varied—God is so creative and has placed within us gifts and talents and callings—and when we use them and so fulfill His purposes and our destinies, our lives will make a huge difference in the light of eternity. I don’t know about you, but I want my sometimes crazy, sometimes painful, always-an-adventure life to actually matter and to make an eternal difference.
Here are two important (yet
simple!) keys to fulfilling our God-given destinies:
(1) We must realize that every choice brings us
either closer to our destiny or further from it. Think that sounds dramatic? It is. Our
choices matter. Each one brings consequences, either good or bad, and affects
us and those around us.
* King Saul refused to
follow God’s instructions, allowing his own inner panic and what people thought
to drive him toward an unwise choice that ultimately cost him his throne (1
Samuel 13).
* Michal, King David’s wife,
chose to despise her husband and it cost her. She remained barren her entire
life (2 Samuel 6), revealing the high cost of a sinful attitude.
*Jesus’s choice to
endure the cross literally changed everything, including the destiny of
billions of people.
So how do we
make choices that move us closer to our destiny instead of leading us in the
wrong direction? Here is the second key:
(2) We must hear what the
Spirit of the Lord is saying to us, and allow Him to lead and guide us.
You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny. Psalm 73:24
Choices aren’t always clear-cut or easy. But
the Holy Spirit is able to bring clarity to our hearts and minds. When we walk
in the Spirit and not in the flesh (Galatians 5:16), when we seek Him, and when
we strive to remain willing and teachable and yielded to the Lord, we will
always go in the right direction because we are allowing ourselves to be guided
by Him. And even when we do make a mistake (we’re only human!), He will show us
and set us back on course. HE guides us to a glorious destiny!
When our choices honor the
Lord, and we keep our hearts in tune with His by following His lead, our lives
will be productive on an eternal level. Our lives will be deeply satisfying,
and ultimately we will fulfill our God-given destinies.
It sounds simple, and in
theory it is, but walking it out? Not so much. We cannot do it without God’s
help. Jesus said, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5), so let’s
pray together and ask Him to help us, because, girl, there’s no way
we can do this without Him.
Lord,
As I go through my day I make
myriad choices, and my heart is for each one to line up with Your eternal
purposes for me. I long to make wise choices that bring me closer to my
God-given destiny, not lead me away from it.
Please give me wisdom. Give
me ears to hear what Your Spirit is saying to me. Help me to walk in the Spirit
and not in the flesh. Help me to allow myself to be led and guided by You
daily, so that my life pleases You and makes an eternal difference. In the
strong name of Jesus, Amen.
